Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Inter-organizational and Inter-institutional Support Branch (IISB), Office for Intergovernmental Support and Coordination for Sustainable Development (OISC), Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA). Within delegated authority, the Senior Economic Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
ECONOMIC OR SECTORAL ANALYSIS:
• Leads or participates in the formulation, organization and management of mandated programmes of economic analysis and the formulation of possible economic strategies, policies and actions for adoption by the international community, including in relation to the interlinkages between peace and development.
• Leads or participates in the identification of new or emerging development issues of potential concern to the international community, particularly those of a regional or global nature, and brings them to the attention of the Economic and Social Council.
• Monitors the implementation of institutional mandates emanating from the Economic and Social Council and the General Assembly and evolution of the UN approach to peace and development, including gender considerations.
• Commissions a variety of studies and analyses that cannot be undertaken internally in relation to peace and development.
• Conceives, plans and manages expert group meetings, seminars and similar consultations that contribute to the finalization of the work unit’s outputs.
• Finalizes reports on development for issuance by the United Nations.
• Prepares speeches and talking points for senior staff UN Officials and the ECOSOC Bureau and makes presentations on economic issues for specialist or non-specialist audiences.
• Provides direct substantive support on development issues, including peace and development, to intergovernmental bodies (such as the General Assembly, the Economic and Social Council, as well as the high level political forum for sustainable development (HLPF) by offering strategic advice, giving technical guidance and
assisting in developing a consensus.
• Manages the work unit’s contribution to the preparation and management of meetings of intergovernmental bodies, including ECOSOC’s Ad Hoc Advisory Group on Haiti.
• Represents the organizational unit at international, regional and national meetings on peace and development issues.
• Contributes to the formulation of the medium-term plan, the programme of work and the budget of the unit and participate in the formulation of the organization’s overall programme of work and other similar endeavours.
• Attends to various administrative matters concerning the Branch and Office.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in economics or related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted, in lieu of the advanced university degree.
A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in economic research and analysis, policy formulation, application of economic principles in sustainable development programmes or related area is required.
Experience in analysis of the interlinkages between peace and development is desirable.
Experience in servicing UN intergovernmental bodies in the area of sustainable development is desirable.
Experience in working with Permanent Representatives and Ambassadors, as well as, with UN entities is desirable.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required; and knowledge of the other is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
